The starting point

The microfinance bank wanted its customers to bank from their phones rather than visit a branch, whether they carry a smartphone or a basic handset. Its staff needed one place to manage customers and the digital channels, and every channel had to work from the bank's own core banking system, with sign-in codes customers would actually receive.

What we delivered

  • Android and iOS mobile banking apps for the bank's customers
  • A USSD banking channel for customers on basic phones
  • An admin dashboard for bank staff to manage customers and the digital channels
  • Integration with the bank's core banking system, so every channel works from the same accounts and products
  • One-time passwords delivered on WhatsApp
  • Production go-live in June 2026, followed by an annual support agreement

The client

Our client is a microfinance bank in Somalia. Our team delivered this project with a delivery partner; the client is not named.

What the bank needed

Customers wanted to check balances, move money and manage their financing without a trip to a branch. Some carry smartphones and some do not. Staff needed to support those customers from one screen. And everything had to run from the bank’s own core banking system, so a customer sees the same balance on the app, on USSD and at the counter.

What we built

Mobile banking on Android and iOS. Customers sign in, see their accounts and transact from their phones.

USSD for every handset. The same core services, available by dialling a short code on a basic phone.

An admin dashboard. Bank staff manage customers and the digital channels from one place.

One-time passwords on WhatsApp. Sign-in and transaction codes go out on WhatsApp, a channel customers already read every day.

Core banking integration. Every channel works from the bank’s core banking system rather than a copy of it, so there is one set of balances and one record of each transaction.

Live and supported

The system has been live in production since June 2026, and the bank has an annual support agreement. For microfinance banks and SACCOs in Kenya the lesson carries over directly: serve smartphone and basic-phone customers from one core, and send codes on the channel they already read.

What it runs on

  • Android
  • iOS
  • USSD
  • Core banking integration
  • WhatsApp one-time passwords
